Our heritage

In the early 1970s, nestled amidst the rolling hills of Imperia, Italy, a modest bakery emerged. The first generation of the family—pioneers of dough and dreams—kneaded their way into the hearts of locals. Their bread, warm and fragrant, became a daily ritual for the villagers.

Three decades passed, and the bakery flourished, opening two more branches in the area

In 2002, the grandsons—the torchbearers of flavor—made a pivotal decision. In Dolcedo, where the sun kissed the terracotta rooftops, they founded I Pani S.r.l., a name that resonated with authenticity. The ovens roared to life, and the air hummed with anticipation.

“I Pani” wasn’t just a bakery; it was an orchestra of flavors. Within its walls, secrets whispered from flour sacks to rolling pins. The grandsons started producing only "ciappe" but later on expanded their repertoire, crafting more than mere loaves. Their offerings spannes today 5 families of bakery delights:

  1. Bruschetta: From rustic “Bruschettina” to dainty “Mini Bruschetta,” each slice bore the sun’s warmth and the earth’s essence.
  2. Grissini: These slender breadsticks danced between tradition and innovation, crisp and irresistible.
  3. Crispy Focaccia: The oven sang as rosemary met olive oil, creating a symphony of crunch and tenderness.
  4. Ligurian Ciappa: A heritage woven into every crumb, the Ciappa whispered tales of ancient grains and coastal winds.
  5. Toasted Italian Focaccia: the most recent homage to ligurian tradition.

In 2003 for the first time I Pani took part in the "Fancy Food Show" in New York spreading their delicious products all around the world and then winning the "Best Baked Product Award" with the "Bruschetta". In 2005 I Pani entered the UK market, which meant an improvement of quality and safety processes in all business areas, which has been the main company’s focus ever since.

In 2010 I Pani moved to a new, larger warehouse in Chiusavecchia to better respond to the continuosly increasing demands of the international market. In 2022 a new transfer took the company to Dolceacqua, a guarantee of better expansion and growth.

Today I Pani combines large-scale production with traditional recipes, genuine ingredients, craftsmanship and quality products, in line with the family's expertise in baking for over 50 years.

Our location

I Pani is located in the inland of Liguria, a thin slice of land in the northwestern part of Italy, home to fine quality “Made in Italy” products such as extra virgin olive oil, basil, pesto and many other typical specialties.

Following the gentle curves from the seaside to the hills, you reach Dolceacqua, a picturesque village surrounded by vineyards and olive trees,  home to the Doria’s castle and  the medieval stone bridge, places and views that have enchanted even Monet, who take them as an inspiration for his canvases.

Just beyond Dolceacqua, nestled between the river and the hills, you will find I Pani’s new factory, which also stands on historical grounds as beyond the walls of the new offices there are the ruins of the ancient paper mill owned by the “Signoria Doria” and which date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

The combined heritage of this location and the company’s history create a perfect place to revive and rediscover tradition through the flavor of our products.
